A further manufacturing commitment

Nestlé plans to invest another US$1 billion in Mexico during 2028–2030 to strengthen manufacturing, modernise facilities and introduce technology. The new commitment follows a separate US$1 billion programme for 2025–2027, bringing the two announced commitments to US$2 billion. The earlier programme includes work at the Maggi factory in Estado de México and increased Nescafé production capacity in Veracruz.

Fausto Costa, Nestlé Mexico’s chief executive, describes the new phase as a sign of confidence in the country’s growth potential. Local agricultural sourcing is part of the strategy, including continued support for sustainable and regenerative farming through the Nescafé Plan. The new investment’s stated priorities include:

  • Stronger production and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Facility modernisation and technology.
  • More efficient and sustainable processes.

The 2025–2027 programme

Nestlé announced its earlier three-year investment on January 28, 2025, following a meeting at Palacio Nacional in Mexico City. The programme envisaged increased production-line capacity at plants in Veracruz, Guanajuato, Querétaro and Estado de México, alongside a new distribution centre. The company intended these projects to strengthen Mexico’s role as an export hub.

Alongside infrastructure investment, Nestlé estimated that purchases of Mexican agricultural products would reach US$2.045 billion during 2025–2027. This procurement estimate covered inputs such as milk, coffee, cocoa and fruit. Its responsible-sourcing programmes, including the Nescafé Plan and Nestlé Cocoa Plan, operated in Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero, providing training and technical assistance and promoting regenerative agricultural practices.

Veracruz’s earlier coffee investment

Nestlé opened a Nescafé coffee factory in Veracruz in 2022, a US$340 million project that the company said created 1,200 regional jobs. The factory made Mexico Nestlé’s largest coffee-producing country at that time. These figures describe the earlier factory project, with a different investment date and scope from the subsequent manufacturing programmes.

At the opening, Nestlé described wastewater-treatment systems designed for full water recirculation, zero wastewater discharge and zero waste to landfill. The company also reported entirely green electricity and a biomass boiler intended to use coffee-processing residues for energy. Its Nescafé Plan offered specialist advice to growers; the Mexican Nescafé supply chain comprised 80,000 coffee growers in 2022.
